Join the San Juan College Planetarium's, The Mars Show!

Night sky picture of stars and nebula, San Juan College Planetarium, AstroFriday

This one-hour, live presentation uses the star projector and other computers to tour the Red Planet virtually. First, view Mars as a globe, then descend to the surface to view many of the landing sites from which we had successful robotic landing missions. Then, observe the night sky as it would appear from the surface of Mars. See such objects as the Martian moons Phobos and Deimos in the planetarium sky. Autumn sky maps will be given out while supplies last.

Public Stargaze

If weather permits, a free public stargaze with telescopes will start at 8:30 p.m. in the Connie Gotsch Theatre courtyard behind the planetarium after the last show. The stargaze will last a maximum of one hour. There is no capacity limit for the stargaze. The headliner objects for the evening will be the silvery First Quarter Moon, Saturn and its spectacular rings, and the planet Jupiter and its Galilean moons. Additionally, one of the top telescopic targets for the evening will be the colorful gold-and-blue double star Albireo, as well as the blue-and-orange Gamma Andromedae.

If weather conditions are particularly favorable, deep-sky objects such as the Ring Nebula in Lyra, the globular cluster M13 in Hercules, the sparkling Pleiades star cluster M45, and our nearest galactic neighbor M31, the Andromeda Galaxy, may be visible.
